Grind: The Graphics and Culture of Skateboarding (1995)

When did the first exhibitions of skate art and skate culture begin to take place? I don't proclaim to have the answer to that -- though it would be interesting to research it. However, one thing that can be said for certain is that it was at least as early as the autumn of 1995 when the Huntington Beach Art Center hosted an exhibition, "Grind: The Graphics and Culture of Skateboarding." That exhibition took place from September 16 through October 15, 1995 -- only a few short years after the heyday of the 1980's.

I first became aware of this exhibition by way of Sean Cliver who mentioned it on his Disposable blog.  This was the programme that went with the exhibition, written by individuals such as Ed Templeton, Bernie Tostenton, Mike Vallely and others.

To share the wealth, I decided to scan the exhibition booklet and share it with you here today. (Click on each graphic to enlarge the text.)
